WWE legend John Cena has addressed fan concerns about the voting system in the newly announced John Cena Classic event.
The concept, revealed at Backlash, allows fans to vote for the night’s champion — regardless of who wins or loses in the ring. While the idea sparked excitement, some critics, including former WWE star Lance Storm, questioned whether talent would hesitate to elevate opponents if votes determined the outcome.
In a recent interview, Cena acknowledged the feedback but defended the format:
“We’ve gotta figure out the fan votes, there’s still a lot to be done. But you can vote for the winners — you just can also vote for everybody. And that’s a first‑time.”
Cena explained that the Classic is designed to feel like WWE’s version of an All‑Star Game, mixing current stars with NXT talent in exhibition matches. He emphasized that the event is about opportunity, giving younger wrestlers a chance to showcase themselves on a big stage.
While he admitted the format is still evolving, Cena stressed that the goal is to create something fresh and exciting for fans: “I’m trying to do something new. WWE, we’re trying to do something new. And that’s gonna come with praise, it’s also gonna come with critique.”
