Former WWE Champion AJ Styles recently discussed how the modern wrestling landscape has changed, making it more difficult for performers to improvise matches compared to earlier eras.
Styles noted that the current WWE environment places greater emphasis on structure and production, which limits the freedom wrestlers once had to adjust on the fly:
“It’s harder to improvise now. Back in the day, you could call a lot more in the ring. Today, everything is timed out, and there’s so much that goes into the show.”
He explained that while improvisation still exists, the pace and precision of modern broadcasts mean performers must stick closer to the planned format. For Styles, this shift reflects WWE’s evolution into a global entertainment powerhouse, where every segment is carefully crafted for television.
Despite the challenges, Styles emphasized that adapting to these changes is part of being a professional, and he continues to thrive under the current system.
