Stephanie McMahon Reveals WWE Considered Earlier Plan for Cody Rhodes’ Title Win

Stephanie McMahon has disclosed that WWE initially had plans for Cody Rhodes to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship sooner than his WrestleMania 40 victory over Roman Reigns.

Speaking on What’s Your Story?, McMahon explained that while Rhodes’ triumph at WrestleMania 40 was the culmination of a long journey, there were discussions about accelerating the storyline. “It was complicated, there was one plan that had it happening right away, and then some other things happened and the plan changed. But we were all in on Cody as soon as he came back,” she said.

Rhodes returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38 after several years on the independent circuit and as a founding member of AEW. His stated goal was to win the championship his father, Dusty Rhodes, never held. After losing to Reigns at WrestleMania 39 and winning back‑to‑back Royal Rumbles, Rhodes finally achieved that milestone at WrestleMania 40.

Since then, Rhodes has held the Undisputed WWE Championship three times, with his first reign lasting 378 days and widely regarded as his most dominant.

Key Points

  • WWE originally considered giving Rhodes the championship earlier than WrestleMania 40.

  • McMahon confirmed the company was committed to Rhodes upon his return.

  • Rhodes’ first title reign lasted 378 days, marking a career highlight.
